A roof repair addresses a localised failure: slipped or missing tiles, a leaking valley, a failed lead flashing, cracked cement ridge bedding, blocked or split gutters, damaged verges, or a failed skylight seal. The work is targeted, we don't quote for a re-roof when a repair will genuinely last another 15 years.

You need a repair when you can see a slipped or missing tile, when the ceiling below is staining or dripping, when torrential rain reveals a leak, after high winds have moved ridge or verge tiles, or when a gutter is visibly split or sagging.
Roof repairs are where amateur and cut-price work costs the most in the long run. Sealant on a lead flashing lasts 18 months; the correct lead upgrade lasts 30 years. Mortar-bedded ridges crack and leak; dry-fixed ridges don't. The right repair costs slightly more once and never again.

Sealant instead of lead
Applying black mastic to a failed lead flashing looks like a fix. In practice, the sealant lets go by the second summer of UV, and you're chasing the same leak while the timber below rots quietly.
Bedding a ridge in cement
Cement-bedded ridges were standard until 2015. They shrink, crack and let water into the ridge void. Current best practice is a dry-fix ridge system, no cement, mechanically fixed, guaranteed watertight.
Ignoring the source of a leak
Water can travel two metres along a batten before it appears on a ceiling. Repairing the tile directly above the stain is often the wrong tile. Drone survey pinpoints the actual entry point.
Leaving a slipped tile 'because it's not leaking'
A slipped tile exposes the underlay to UV, and one missing tile becomes three within a season. What was a £180 repair becomes a £600 patch of felt and battens.

Diagnostic methods
We start with drone photography of the entire roof, not just the reported area, because leaks routinely originate two, three or four metres from where they appear. Where necessary we follow up with a physical inspection via IPAF-operated MEWP or roof ladder. Every diagnosis is documented in writing with annotated photography.
Repair vs replace decisions
If a repair will genuinely give another 10+ years' service, we repair. If the underlay is torn across multiple areas, tiles are consistently slipping across whole slopes, or you've had three or more repairs in five years, we'll flag re-roofing as the economical option, with numbers, not pressure.

Lead Work & Lead Flashing
Lead work is the traditional, hand-formed metal detailing at every point on the roof where two surfaces meet, chimney stacks, side abutments to walls, valleys between roof slopes, box gutters, dormer cheeks and heads, parapet cappings, and window heads. Code 4, code 5 and code 6 lead sheet is cut, dressed and welded on site to create a watertight, 50+ year seal.
